HERE IS A SHORT OVERVIEW OF THIS STORY Eighth-grader Tomikazu Nakaji and his best friend, Billy Davis, are playing in the field near their homes in Hawaii on the day the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. When Tomi recognizes the red sun emblem on the fighter planes, he feels frightened and ashamed of his native land. Life gets tough for the Nakaji family. Tomi's father and grandfather, along with other Japanese Americans, are arrested and taken to relocation centers. Mama loses her job because she is Japanese, Papa's fishing boat is destroyed, Tomi encounters a bigoted bully, and the family is forced to deny their heritage by burying their cherished Japanese belongings.
